********* Welcome to Project 64! http://project64.c64.org The goal of Project 64 is to preserve Commodore 64 related documents in electronic text format that might otherwise cease to exist with the rapid advancement of computer technology and declining interest in 8- bit computers on the part of the general population. If you would like to help by converting C64 related hardcopy documents to electronic texts please contact the manager of Project 64. Extensive efforts were made to preserve the contents of the original document. However, certain portions, such as diagrams, program listings, and indexes may have been either altered or sacrificed due to the limitations of plain vanilla text. Diagrams may have been eliminated where ASCII-art was not feasible. Program listings may be missing display codes where substitutions were not possible. Tables of contents and indexes may have been changed from page number references to section number references. Please accept our apologies for these limitations, alterations, and possible omissions. Document names are limited to the 8.3 file convention of DOS. The first characters of the file name are an abbreviation of the original document name. The version number of the etext follows next. After that a letter may appear to indicate the particular source of the document. Finally, the document is given a .TXT extension. The author(s) of the original document and members of Project 64 make no representations about the accuracy or suitability of this material for any purpose. This etext is provided "as-is". Please refer to the warrantee of the original document, if any, that may included in this etext. No other warrantees, express or implied, are made to you as to the etext or any medium it may be on. Neither the author(s) nor the members of Project 64 will assume liability for damages either from the direct or indirect use of this etext or from the distribution of or modification to this etext. Therefore if you read this document or use the information herein you do so at your own risk. ********* The Project 64 etext of then Orm and Cheep: The Birthday Party manual Converted to etext by Neil Tomlinson. ********* Orm and Cheep: The Birthday Party --------------------------------- To load from tape: Press SHIFT and RUN/STOP simultaneously, then release. The program starts with a reaction tester which sets the level of play. The words 'ORM AND CHEEP' will drop one by one. You must press a key to stop them as near to the line as possible. Get ready, with fingers by the keys! Press any key to begin. You have set your starting level with the reaction tester. Your difficulty level will adjust automatically as you play, depending on your success. Today is Orm's birthday. He is going to bake himself a birthday cake, but he's run out of ingredients. Cheep wants to help Orm by refilling the jars in the kitchen. Orm's jars are on the shelf. Orm shows Cheep the contents of each jar - flour, sugar, jam, cherries, popcorn, bag of sultanas. Now you must help Cheep find the right jar for each ingredient. Press any key to stop Cheep over the correct jar, until he has filled all of them. Now Orm can make his cake. Orm asks Cheep to go and find all their friends - Snail, Mouse, Hedgehog, Mole - and bring them back to Orm's house for a surprise! Help Cheep find the friends in the countryside. The signposts show the ways Cheep could go - press any key when the direction you want flashes red. When Cheep finds a friend, press any key to collect the animal and continue on the adventure. Before the animals can go back and enjoy Orm's party in safety, Cheep must make sure the three foes are out of the way. When he meets Rat, Cat or Crow, he needs the right friends with him to scare the foe away. The little pictures show which friends he needs. Snail, Mouse and Hedgehog can be found above ground, but Mole will only be found in his tunnels. Cheep must go into the tunnels through Mole's mole hill. Try to remember the way you go through the tunnels - when you have found Mole you must take him back out of the tunnels through the same door. Wherever you are in the tunnels you will see a 'Cheep's-eye-view' - as if you have just emerged from the tunnel at the bottom of the screen. Cheep flutters by each branch of the tunnel in turn - straight ahead, right turn, back the way he's just come at the bottom of the screen, left turn. Press any key to take Cheep along the tunnel of your choice. Here's a simple map to give you an idea of Mole's tunnels. It might help to draw one for yourself as you explore the maze. ____ ____ ____ / \___/ \___/ \ | ___ ___ | \_ _/ \_ _/ \_ _/ _||_ _||_ _||_ / \___/ \___/ \ | ___ ___ | \_ _/ \_ _/ \_ _/ _||_ _||_ _||_ / \___/ \___/ \ | ___ ___ | \ / \____/ \____/ | | door from Mole's hill The foes can hide in Mole's tunnels too. Cheep can't go past them this time. If he's foolish enough to try when Mole's with him, Mole will disappear into the maze again and Cheep gets frightened back to the start! Once Cheep has collected all the friends and scared away all the foes, they can go back to Orm's house. Meanwhile, Orm has laid a place at the table for each friend. You have to put them in the right places. Each animal flashes in turn. Press any key to move that animal to the empty place. Sometimes the correct positions are shown by the animal's colours, and you have to juggle the animals around until you get it right. Other times, to make it more difficult, you have to find out the correct places for yourself. Watch Orm for help - the number of times he shakes his head tells you the number of animals which are in the right place. (Hint - don't forget Orm has a correct place too!) If this is still too easy for you - you'll be given a handicap! You won't be able to move the friend opposite the empty chair. When all the friends are seated, Orm goes to get the food. Suddenly Crow appears at the door and causes chaos. Orm returns with his 'Orm cake' to find the friends in the wrong places again. Move them to their new positions then the party can finally get underway. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Orm and Cheep characters devised and created by Tony Martin © 1983 Independent Producers/Tony Martin.
